Spider plants are pretty flexible with respect to their growing situation. Typically, they will get to be about (very roughly) twice the size of the pot they are in before they start putting out runners with baby spider plants. (Being rootbound is a cue to make runners.) The growth of the mother plant will slow down considerably when this happens.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the spider plant with the most baby plants had a spread of three feet and a height of two feet. The person who grew that plant probably put much effort into encouraging it to grow so big.
