I have a cat that won't stop eating my plants any suggestions?

I just planted seeds and the seeds are now sprouting (vegetable plants) and I have found some of my cucumber plants and tomato plants chewed on. The other day I came home and I have a spider plant that had been on the banaster of my stairs and it was knocked down pot busted and dirt all over the place. I now put him in the basement when I leave but since I have been home at night he eats my vegetable plants. They're to big to cover and I have tried using a spray bottle to keep him away, no luck! Any suggestions on how to keep my cat from ruining my plants?

Cats need to eat grass as it performs a mechanical function. Ingested blades of grass trigger regurgitation of indigestible or hard to digest matter, like the cats’ own hair swallowed during grooming, or fur and bones of prey. Expelling this matter through regurgitation, similar to birds of prey, is safer than allowing it to pass through the digestive tract where it could possibly cause a blockage.

Provide indoor cats with potted grass at all times, as they may otherwise chew on houseplants. Discourage your cat from eating grass right after eating a meal, however, as they may unintentionally regurgitate their dinner.

Reply:Cats love plants and the spray bottle only helps when you can see them chewing. You can try some things to make the plants less attractive. There are several things you can try until you find the one that works with your cat. You can put mothballs just under the surface of the soil. Cats don't like the smell and should avoid the planter. You can also dust the plant (very lightly) and the dirt under it with cayenne pepper -- it will permeate the leaves and taste bad when the kitty takes the next bite. Soon the smell of cayenne in the dirt will discourage any chewing. Another idea is to give the cat plants they can chew safely, since they love greens. Your pet shop or online pet supply sources have cat greens available that will satisfy the cat's needs.

Another thing that will definitely work is the use of a "Scat Mat" on the surface around the plant. The Scatmat is clear, but delivers a mild electric shock when the cat steps on it. They learn very quickly to avoid that place! These are available online, but are pricey. Good luck!
Reply:Keep him out of the yard and keep him away from plants and keep the plants out of his reach.
Reply:go to the pet store a buy something called bitter apple. spray on whatever you don't want him to chew on. It won't hurt him or the plants, but it tastes awful. so he should stop eating them.
Reply:Whenever my cat is doing something that isn't right, I use a spray bottle filled with water and spray at him when I see him doing it.. It gives a cat the idea that whatever they're biting or clawing is defending itself. It is also good because it involves no pain toward the cat.
