Onion plant problems?

I started an onion plant by sticking a rotting onion in dirt when it sprouted leaves. It was thriving, but in a small pot, so I put the onion in a larger pot. Now it is dying. The leaves are yellowing and dead and the tips, and the leaves thin out and curl into themselves.

I recently pulled the onion out of the dirt, to see what was wrong There are hundreds of light brown spider-like creatures crawling all over it. I have no idea what they are.

What should I do? Just ask for more info-Thanks
